Always & Forever

I like to think of a time where things appeared to be less complicated.  As I go back down memory lane, I am going to take you on a journey of how my mind works.  What was once seen as nerve wrecking is now seen as sweet and loving.  Case and point, how a boy would ask you to be his girlfriend via a note passed around in the classroom with everyone praying that the teacher doesn’t catch them.  Oh the times, when Lorenzo and Calvin both asked, and I thought that was the most complicated decision ever.  I mean, both boys were cute and in my classroom.  But you know, mom didn’t let you talk to boys after school, so how to make a decision.  Well, growing up in Chicago, walking to school was key. As the direction of where you lived determined the boyfriend girlfriend relationship.  So of course since Calvin and I lived in the same building, he won, well at least the first time around. You know as a kid breaking up and having multiply little boyfriends was cute.  Now as a grown woman, you are like, child I do not have time for that. You wind up talking to God saying, just send me a decent one, with a job, who believes and loves on you, and knows how to treat me right.  You realize that what was so innocent and cute, requires work if it is to every last.

Other flashback was how as teens and young adults your friends truly looked out for you.  You never got mad or said someone was a hater if your homegirl came to you and told you she saw your “man” with another girl.  Oh no, you picked up the phone, and you called him and said, “Hey Keisha told me she saw you and Stacy out together.”  “And before you even lie, I know you were, so what is all that about” . I mean friends just knew that they wanted the best for you and not this, I am going to mind my business, and she will find out sooner or later that he isn’t right.  I am reminded of how I had a serious crush my freshmen year in college, and my girls Tamika and Teneisha, pretended like they had other things to do, just so I could experience my first date with David.  Now nothing materialized from that outcome, but I was on cloud nine.  They could have easily thrown salt on the situation but they knew how much I liked him, and they wanted me to have my date. It are times like that they you are just happy to have good friends.

I could go on and on, about what goes on in my head and how every once in a while taking a trip down memory lane just brings back the best memories.  I am in the process of making new memories.  Memories in which when I turn 82, I can tell my nieces and nephews how I remember back in 2013, my girls and I took a trip to Costa Rica, and I had the opportunity to go snorkeling for the first time.  In addition, in 2013 this man boy thought that just because I was a virgin and he had a little swag that I was going to lose my mind and be all over him.  Only for him to not realize that my brothers are some of the coolest, slickest man boys around, and I knew how to spot a man boy from a mile away.  Oh yeah, I cannot wait to really be able to tell my stories and just let them rip.  See that is what I want us to do.  Build upon our memories, not just the ones from our childhood, but from young adulthood and beyond. We all have a story to tell, let it not stop at the age of 16.
