Hmmm, I find myself thinking about this exact topic. Here's my opinion as a woman who is staring at 40 and has had the opportunity to date casually and to experience long term relationships. There are no magic numbers or time spans that will tell you if a person is right for you or what type of relationship you should have with another person. I am sure you've heard of couples who have said that they didn't really know their spouse of 25 years. People will show you what they want to show you, what you want to see and you see what you want to see. It takes a lot to be butt naked honest and up front with someone, for some people they can do it right away, because they are open to trust the other person, then there are those who are reluctant to even take off a shoe (meaning they will not even tell you where they live) in the first six months of knowing you. Don't take it personally, they've been hurt or betrayed in the past. Should you be friends? Yes, but then again think back to your friend who you just didn't "see that way", how do you turn that person from my homey to my Boo? Maintain that romantic attraction, but see that person as a friend too. You commit when you know it's right and trust me, you do know. Become exclusive when you look at each other and know without a doubt that this is the person you want to be with. The first clue is you're ignoring all of the others you're dating and realize that you miss this person everyday. Make sure they feel the same way! You have to ask. Every couple is unique in their progression. Just don't be a ding dang fool. Look, listen and trust your gut, and it helps to have a friend who will remind you to pray. There are no don't questions, if you are looking for a person to spend the rest of your life with you have to be able to ask any and everything. Do questions...check out Gary Champman's "Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got Married". Don't forget the basics: Are you already in a committed relationship?! Are you legally married in any state or country? |
