Does It Even Matter?

I have an eclectic group of Friends that I have accumulated while have different social media accounts. One friend in particular posed the question, “what historical predominantly African-American organizations do we have today, that we no longer need?” I knew where he was coming from, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. For one, I do not believe any organization should be devalued. Few things have a reason to be eliminated. It is my belief that most organizations do more good than bad. However, because the bad is sensationalized we are lead to believe they no longer have the value in which they once had.

Why is it that things with a minority focus are asked to be eliminated? Why are they not asked to be reconstructed? Why is it that we are so ready to walk away from good, but never away from bad? Any organization that has been around for over fifty years is worth fighting for. I see most things as a lack of commitment and dedication. I mean let’s put it in the perspective of marriage. Do we advise someone who has been married for fifty years to walk away just because they have growing pains? Do we advise someone who has been on their job for fifteen years to leave even though the company has maintained a good retention policy with adequate benefits? Why are we so big on giving up? Is it because we are leaning on our own understanding? I mean we need to recognize that we are not all knowing. Therefore, to make statements that something is no longer of value is hogwash. I mean just because you do not see it as instrumental in your life does not mean it is not having an impact in others.

Therefore, while we may not agree with the principles and directions of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Council of Negro Women, Rainbow Push Coalition, or National PanHellenic Council, there is no need to foster the mentality that they are not useful. I do not see people saying get rid of Girls Scouts, Eagle Scouts, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, PETA or the Daughters of American Revolution.  It’s time we build upon strong organizations, not tear them down. I am not all knowing and I do not profess to be. Just because it’s not good for my house, does not mean it’s not good for yours.
