Reality Bites
Broaching this subject matter is sensitive. We are living in a time where 1 in 3 people in America are going to lose their jobs. I point this information out, because I am seeing that people are not preparing themselves. It becomes a harsh reality when you thought that being loyal to a company and dedicated would ensure that you would retain your position, until you decided to move on. Therefore, as my company experience what is being called “workforce reduction” I am lead to inform you of what you should be doing in case you find yourself being reduced from an organization.
- You should be updating your resume every six months.
- Each paycheck you should be setting aside 10% into an emergency fund.
- Network: attend professional outings and join professional organizations
- State abreast of industry trends – nowhere the climate is going
- Subscription to business publications
- Update your LinkedIn account – any account where potential employers can reach you should be reflective of who you are and what you can bring to the table
I give you the following suggestions because it is being reported that at some point each of us have the potential to be laid off. I charge us to be equipped. It’s like insurance; you purchase it not because you need it, but to transfer liability. It’s your safety net. Be prepared, none of us know the minute or the hour, and wouldn’t be nice that when it comes, you can rejoice anyhow.
